The Flex-On Safe-On Ultra-Grip is a safety stirrup that Flex-On supplies in pairs, intended for riders from 40 kg upwards. The elastomer outer arm opens under enough pressure and lets the foot go. The Ultra-Grip tread has fine pins that hold the sole of your boot in place, on wet ground as well. You choose between the sloped Inclined model and the level Flat model yourself.
About this stirrup
The frame is made of hot-forged spring steel with an anti-oxidation treatment, overmoulded with polyamide. Flex-On works with a single branch, so there is no second arch on the inside of your leg. A pair weighs 1 kg. The stirrup leather slot sits offset and at an angle, which makes the stirrup turn under your foot by itself. That does mean there is a left and a right stirrup, which you must not swap. The stirrups are made in France.
The mechanism sits in the supple elastomer outer arm. Flex-On builds two safety fuses into it. The lower one lets the arm open so the foot comes free; you then click the arm back into place yourself and can mount again. In a heavier fall the arm can give way at the top, and you replace it with a separate arm kit. Opening takes at least 40 kg of pressure on the arm. Flex-On adds two limits of its own: as with any mechanical system, the arm opening in every situation cannot be assured, and in a fall at a standstill or at very low speed the arm will probably not open, because that pressure is not there.
Under the tread lie two elastomer blocks. They absorb part of the shocks and vibrations that come from the horse's movement. Worth knowing: the elastomers are not interchangeable. Once the stirrup is assembled, the elastomers, the frame and the tread are fixed. What you can replace later are the magnetic stickers, the insert in the tread and the safety arm.
The tread is wide and on this model carries the Ultra-Grip insert: fine pins that give more grip than the regular Grip insert. The shape is yours to pick. Inclined sits at a slight angle and follows the natural drop of the heel; Flat sits level. Flex-On recommends the level tread for riders with very mobile ankles and calls the sloped tread the sensible choice for everyone else.
